Guild Wars 2 Crafting

Love it or hate it, Crafting is set to make an entrance in Guild Wars 2 with eight crafting disciplines for players to choose from.

Characters can learn as many crafting disciplines as they like but can only be proficient in two at any one time. However, in all major cities there'll be a Master Craftsman NPC who can change your crafting discipline back to one that you've previously learned... for a fee. Guild Wars 2 Crafting When you do this you'll regain your skill level and known recipes from that discipline, but the cost of changing disciplines will increase in direct relation to the skill level you've attained in that discipline. That could get expensive!
The eight Crafting disciplines are :

  • Armorsmith - have the ability to craft heavy armor pieces.
  • Leatherworker - crafters of a variety of medium armor pieces.
  • Tailor - able to craft light armor pieces.
  • Weaponsmith - craft melee weapons, such as swords, axes and hammers.
  • Huntsman - craft ranged weapons like bows and pistols, as well as torches and warhorns.
  • Artificer - craft magical weapons such as staves and scepters.
  • Jewelcrafter - craft jewelry, such as rings and necklaces.
  • Cook - can prepare food which characters can eat for temporary combat buffs.
There are 400 skill points in each discipline, and as a character crafts items they'll gain crafting experience, with some items giving multiple points worth of experience. As they advance in their profession they'll automatically learn new recipes for standard components. The player can then try to combine these standard components into other items to discover new recipes.

In addition, most crafters will be able to create upgrades for their gear. The Weaponsmith, for example, can craft a handle which can be attached to melee weapons to give them a chance to poison enemies.

In order to craft new items you'll first need to gather the raw materials which will depend upon the crafting discipline being used.

There are three ways you can obtain crafting materials:

  • Salvaging kit - allows you to salvage various crafting materials out of old or unwanted items. Available from merchants at a store near you!
  • Looting - Kill something and ransack the corpse for hides, trophies and other useful loot.
  • Harvesting - Ore veins, plants, and trees can be harvested for raw materials.
A huge improvement for Guild Wars 2 in comparison with other MMOs is that gathering is available to ALL characters and gathering nodes are NOT exclusive. Also, nodes aren't "used up" after one player gathers materials from it so you don't need to race other players to a node or curse at them for beating you to it. In GW2 each node can be gathered by EVERY player.
Andrew McLeod, one of the Game Designers responsible for the crafting system puts it this way...

"We decided to make gathering available for all characters for a couple major reasons. First, we wanted gathering nodes to be sought after by every player, so that when players are grouped together they don't need to feel guilty by making the group wait for them while they run off after an ore vein on the side of the road.

Secondly, gathering professions are often used for economic gain, through selling materials to other players, and we didn't want crafters to have to sacrifice their economic potential in order to be able to craft gear for themselves and friends."

Pretty sound logic there I think and will certainly add to the desire to share node locations with others instead of keeping them a dirty little secret!

OK, once you have the discipline and you've gathered the raw materials it's time to get busy and craft your item at one of the many crafting stations which are located in cities and major outposts.

At the crafting station you can combine up to four types of materials. When the correct items for crafting an item are added to the interface, the resulting item can be crafted. If you haven't previously crafted that item, you discover the recipe for that item, allowing you to easily view the correct combination to recreate that item in the future.

Recipes are obtained in three different ways. First, some recipes are automatically learned by characters when they reach certain crafting skill levels. These recipes tend to be basic components that don't do anything other than combine into useful items.

Next are the recipes that are learned by combining these basic items with ingredients found out in the world. These recipes always have the same formula and comprise the majority of recipes in the game. These "discovered" recipes tend to produce very useful items.

The third type of recipe is learned from an item found in the world and is sometimes obtained as a drop, purchased from a merchant for karma, etc... These recipes tend to be variations on "discovered" recipes but are not necessarily superior to them.

Andrew explains the thinking behind this recipe "discovery" system...

"We decided to go with a discovery system for learning recipes so as to allow crafters to distinguish themselves. When there is a static list of recipes learned from a trainer, every character with that crafting discipline is the same. However, with a discovery system, players that spend time and effort on their crafting disciplines have a way to distinguish themselves."
