The Guild Wars 2 Blog Krewe share their thoughts about their favorite MMORPG.
Guild Wars 2 Character CustomisationHere's one of the best videos the Guild Wars 2 Blog Krewe have found so far. It demonstrates the GW2 character creation process from start to finish, resulting in a Human Female Elementalist. Along the way it reveals how a character can be customised not only in appearance but also in personality, attitude and social standing through the implementation of an individual biography.Guild Wars 2 Character Customisation Guild Wars 2 is going to ROCK!
Guild Wars 2 Gamescom VideosThe Guild Wars 2 Blog Krewe have been spending a lot of time poring over the numerous videos that have emerged from gamescom 2010, looking for the best, most informative videos to share with you. Here's a couple we've found that fit the bill :)The first begins by showing a new Human characters home instance in Divinity's Reach and moves on to show a level 47 Charr Warrior in action in a massive battle against the dragon boss "The Shatterer".The second video demonstrates mapping and the Scout system, shows how Dynamic Events work (including a battle with the River Drake Broodmother), and ends with a tour of Divinity's Reach. The Palace Gardens have to be seen to be believed... they are visually amazing! What makes these Guild Wars 2 videos stand out is the accompanying commentary (in English) by an ArenaNet guy who explains what you're seeing and why it's there. Great stuff!Charr NecromancerAnother great video from the Guild Wars 2 demo at Gamescom 2010, this time showing the level 47 Charr Necromancer in battle with a dragon boss known as "The Shatterer".While the commentary is in German, the video makers have added some English subtitles. The video quality is great and gives a good insight into how the Necromancer class will work in GW2.Human Ranger Video From GamescomAuron sent the Guild Wars 2 Blog Krewe a link to one of the best quality videos we've seen. Even though the commentator speaks German, the gameplay is in English and features a newly created Human Ranger experiencing the beginning of the game.Check it out!Human Ranger Video From Gamescom Thanks Auron!GW2 Q&A with Colin JohansonOne of the most interesting interviews I've seen from Gamescom 2010 was the Q&A with Guild Wars 2 Lead Content Designer Colin Johanson. The GW2 Blog Krewe are really impressed with the guy as his passion for the game is obvious and he communicates really well. Some of our favourite things that Colin spoke are listed below.
Pre-Release GW2 VideoJust a couple of days out from the GW2 Demo in Cologne and pre-release video has already leaked of the in-game action! Here's some of the first things you'll see as a level 1 Human player... and you can see the yet-to-be-released Necromancer in action!
PLEASE NOTE : The "bootleg" videos have been removed from this page as they were pretty crappy quality and what they were showing is available in other later blog posts on this site in much better quality, with ArenaNet people giving a step by step description as events unfold. I'm sure these wont be the last pre-release GW2 videos to "leak".GW2 Video UpdateIn the just released GW2 video update, along with some spectacular video of in-game action there are some great comments from game designers, artists and even Mike O'Brien, founder and president of ArenaNet."If you love MMO's you'll want to check out Guild Wars 2... and if you hate MMO's you'll REALLY want to check out Guild Wars 2".Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1 and puts it into a persistent world that's got more active combat, a fully branching personalised storyline, a new event system to get people playing together and STILL no monthly fees!Daniel Dociu, art director, talks about the attention to detail that's been put into the visual parts of the game... "we treat our environments as if they are characters themselves"."When you look at the art in Guild Wars 2 you'll say... Wow, that's visually stunning I've never seen anything like that before... When you play the combat in GW2 you'll say... Wow, that's incredible I've never seen anything like that" gushes lead content designer Colin Johanson. One of my favourite quotes from Colin was "We just don't want players to grind in Guild Wars 2... we want to change the way that people view combat".Ree Soesbee, game designer was equally passionate. "We do not want to build the same MMO everyone else is building". In Guild Wars 2 it's YOUR world, it's YOUR story, you affect things around you. A single decision made by a player cascades out in a chain of events. The most important thing in any game should be the player. We have built a game for them."The video is a must watch ... here it is. ENJOY!The GW2 Blog Krewe are feeling even more jealous of the people who'll be able to get to the hands-on demo of Guild Wars 2 at gamescom in Cologne, followed by a second showing at PAX Prime in Seattle two weeks later.
Your Guild Wars 2 PersonalityCurtis Johnson, one of the designers on Guild Wars 2, has revealed how the actions and interactions with others affects how your personality develops in GW2. Much like in real life, how your character responds to others will develop and change your personality over time, which in turn will affect how the game treats you as you play through your personal story. When you first create a character in Guild Wars 2 you have a biography, which sets your starting personality, but almost immediately you'll start refining it depending on your choices when interacting in dialogue with NPCs.Con someone and you'll become more of a "Scoundrel" type personality. Inspire someone and you'll be known as "Honorable" or maybe even "Noble". Bully and boast your way through Guild Wars 2 and you might well be labelled "Barbaric".Don't despair though, if you find you're not being treated the way you thought you might be, you can change your attitude and your actions and improve your personality to something more to your liking (and probably everybody else's!).There are many opportunities to use your personality for significant reward. Personality is one of the primary ways you will cash in on karma rewards which are earned by helping other players with their personal stories and by participating in events.Personality rewards can be benefit you in different ways. Some of the first titles available for display are linked to your personality but also up for grabs are rewards such as extra experience, Mercenaries joining you free of charge, increased speed and various items which improve your skills and abilities.Guild Wars 2's personality system will help you be you! After all, it is YOUR story.
Guild Wars 2 Character Level CapIsaiah Cartwright (Izzy, to his friends), Guild Wars 2 Game Designer, has confirmed that the character level cap for players in GW2 will be 80.What's even more interesting is that instead of taking longer and longer to go from level to level, it takes about the same time.As the Guild Wars 2 world is filled with an almost endless stream of things to do, there's more to levelling than just killing stuff and gaining XP. Progression is based on achievements, skill collection, trait collection, dungeons, crafting, items and lots more.A few months months ago the GW2 Blog Krewe pondered what the maximum character level might be. After much animated debate we thought that the initial cap might be around level 70-75, with future campaigns / expansions offering small increases up to level 100 maximum. We weren't too far off the mark, though the future increases haven't been confirmed (or denied).Consistent level progression instead of the exponential system used by other MMORPGS is just another way that Guild Wars 2 will be so much more fun to play.
Guild Wars 2 MapArenanet just released a map of Tyria showing the various Guild Wars 2 landmarks.Click on the map below for a larger image. Guild Wars "Ghosts of Ascalon" Novel PreviewWhile you're waiting for Guild Wars 2 to be released, Arenanet have made available a free PDF preview of the novel "Ghosts of Ascalon".Co-authored by Matt Forbeck and Jeff Grubb, the novel tells the story of Dougal Keane, one of the few people to have walked within the haunted walls within Ascalon City and lived to tell the tale, as he leads a team of adventurers back into the ruins of the fallen kingdom in a desperate search for a lost Charr relic, the "Claw of Khan-Ur".Roughly 250 years have passed since the events of Guild Wars and the novel's storyline takes place one year prior to GW2 and gives readers a deeper understanding of the cataclysmic events that take place in the years between the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.There is a strong connection between the game and the book and something which will deepen the reader's enjoyment of the book is that players be able to interact with Dougal Keane and some of the books other major characters in Guild Wars 2.One tasty morsel of information revealed in the preview is that one of Dougal's party members, Killeen, is a Sylvari NECROMANCER, which means it could well be the next profession to be "officially" unveiled. If you like what you read in the free preview, want to get up to speed on some of the characters you'll meet in Guild Wars 2, or maybe you just want to see what other unannounced pieces of information you can discover, "Ghosts of Ascalon" is available in paperback from July 27, 2010.

Guild Wars 2 RangerJackal, one of the Guild Wars 2 Blog Krewe, is happier than a dog with two bones after the third character class in GW2 was confirmed as being the Ranger. Touted as... "a keen-eyed master of archery who can harness the power of nature or fight alongside his loyal animal companion"... the Guild Wars 2 ranger has a range of special skill types allowing him to lay traps, summon nature spirits, command 12 different types of pets or barrage his foes from afar.
PetsAs in the original GW, the Guild Wars 2 ranger charms his pets into joining him as a faithful companion. Old faithfuls such as Moa birds, Wolves, Spiders, Lizards and Bears are available to charm but there are also some new additions including a Devourer, a Snow Leopard and the first water-based pet, the Shark!A GW2 ranger has three active pet slots and can switch the pets whenever outside of combat, or by using utility skills, but only one pet can be active at any time. A pets' base health, armor, and damage are based on the level of their owner. In Guild Wars 2 the ranger must charm juvenile versions of whichever pet they want and they evolve as they adventure with their owner. Each pet has 20 levels of evolution. At certain evolution levels, pets will unlock up to four ability slots which can be filled from a list of active pet abilities based on pet type.Pets can be ordered to "heel", "stay" and "attack" which is a great feature to avoid unintentional aggros and pet-induced pulls. Here's a look at Guild Wars 2 Rangers dishing out some Barrage Pet mayhem! Guild Wars 2 Ranger More videos and detailed, up-to-date information on the Ranger can be found here... The Guild Wars 2 Ranger. For all the latest info about the various Ranger pets ... GW2 Ranger Pets. WeaponsWhile the ranger is primarily a ranged weapons master, utilising two-handed Longbows and Shortbows he can also engage in melee combat using a two-handed Greatsword or a one-handed Sword or Axe in his main hand, with a Dagger, Warhorn or Torch in his offhand.TrapsAs in previous campaigns, the Guild Wars 2 Ranger will be able to place traps at their current location which will stay active as long as the ranger chooses to remain close to it. Spike Trap is back and will cripple and bleed enemies that pass through it. In a change to previous campaigns the GW2 ranger can only have one of each trap type out at any given time.SpiritsThe ranger's spirit skills summon a nature spirit that affects the area around it. The "Sun Spirit", for example adds fire damage to allied attacks inside its area of influence. A spirit stays out for a short period of time and goes away if the ranger wanders too far away from it. As with traps, a ranger can only have one of each type of spirit out at any given time. It's enough to make you "quiver" with excitement... Guild Wars 2 hits another bullseye!
